Cricket is a national summer sport played all over the world. It involves two teams of 11 players in each. The field ground is oval, having a rectangular piece of an area called the pitch. 

 

It is a specific area where the batsman plays. Usually, a pitch angle is 22 yards by 10 feet or 20.12 meters by 3.04 meters wide.

 

 

Both sides of the pitch have wickets made of three wooden sticks, and there lie the horizontal pieces across the top of each wicket called bails. 

 

Each team has its turn (batting or bowling) called innings, depending on the whole match’s pre-arranged duration. Any team to score high will win the game.

Cricket Importance

Generally, the cricket pitch texture would be batsman-friendly. Cricket pitch textures vary from region to region, affected by weather and soil. That is why players play cricket on the same ground, which may result differently because of the texture of the pitch. 

 

 

Players can perform high-grade International Cricket only on a standard good quality pitch. It is always a pitch that provides a keen contest between batch and ball. Thus, it should have a good pace, a consistent bounce, and a conducive stroke play.

Maintenance Pitch

There are some measures to maintain cricket pitch textures.

  • Commonly, an ideal pitch needs to keep moist with some green grass over it. A cricket pitch texture should always have a consistent pace and bounce.

  • The dried pitch becomes bouncier. It should quicken up uniformly to avoid becoming too dry quickly. Because a green grass surface will allow the ball to seam around. When the cricket pitch texture loses its greenness, it does not seem around. By quicken it up from the bottom, the pitch should be ideal for the sport.

  • In some regions, the cricket pitch’s texture deteriorates slightly and will start producing a powdery texture. This granular surface helps the cracks to open up. The pitch will become less bouncy, inconsistent, and it will slow the pitch down.

In addition to an ideal cricket pitch’s characteristics, its soil should have the following essential specifications.

  • It should have a plasticity that will give a smooth surface.

  • It should have a profound yet dried hard surface that will help the elasticity and provide the grounds for fast bowlers and turns for the spinners. 

  • An ideal cricket pitch texture should have soil cohesion that will prevent the powdering of the surface. 

  • It should be capable of recovering from compaction so that the green grass will regenerate after the play. 

Maintaining uniform and deep-rooted grass growth is the primary reason for having an ideal cricket pitch texture. It acts as a skeleton of the pitch, collectively providing a pitch’s definite shape and structure. 

 

The newly laid yet ideal pitch will nearly have 10 to 15 years of economic life and produce high results but restricted due to the accumulation of dead grass converted into humus and dead organic matter. It will slowly reduce the clay percentage. Faulty rolling schedules and heavy salt accumulation positively affects the pH level.
